AFL Helping to Change the World for Feral Cats (6/10/2007)

On Sunday, June 10, seven of us from the AFL board (including some family members) volunteered at Alley Cat Allies "Feline Frenzy" to spay and neuter (and provide medical care to) 68 feral cats from Atlantic City. We did this to help with a cause we deeply believe in, and also to get some hands-on experience with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release), the most humane way in which to control a feral cat population.

Lansdowne has six established feral colonies, and it is our dream one day soon, to bring such a clinic to our own community and to manage feral cat population effectively and humanely. Alley Cat Allies are the international experts and activists in this field, and we were honored and excited to participate in this effort.

Please check out the news report on this successful event featured on the Alley Cat Allies website, as well as the excellent TV coverage Feline Frenzy received.

Library display

For the second year in a row, Animal Friends of Lansdowne was asked to create a display in the Lansdowne Public Library's entry foyer. This year's display provides information about Lansdowne animal ordinances and fifteen reasons to keep your cats indoors. AFL also helped the library purchase a number of animal-related books for readers of all ages and is sponsoring a poetry contest. Check the Lansdowne Library website for information about this month's animal-themed events including movie night showing "Happy Feet" and book club where the popular Marley and Me will be featured.

Drexel Avenue Accident: Was This Your Cat?

We are saddened to report that on Tuesday evening December 12, a large, grey tabby with white back paws and strong striped markings on his tail, was struck and killed by a car on Drexel Avenue in Lansdowne. Neighbors saw the accident and reported it to AFL in hopes of being able to locate the cat's owners. The cat was not wearing any collar or identification.

If you know who this cat may have belonged to, please contact Animal Friends so that we can help to notify them of this tragedy.

We are sorry to have to share such bad news, and we hope that all who read this will take it to heart and be reminded of the importance of keeping our pets safely indoors, leashed and identified.

Urgent Help Needed to Find Temporary/Permanent Homes for Orphaned Cats in Lansdowne

Animal Friends of Lansdowne is working with other organizations to help 14 orphaned cats, all young and friendly, who have been surrendered and removed from an abandoned house on Owen Avenue, and who must be placed in foster homes or go quickly to the SPCA, where they will likely be immediately euthanized due to their surrendered status.

The cats are temporarily housed with Animal Control, which has no facility in which to keep them. Two have been placed in foster homes, and we will be placing an addition 4-6 with some of our board members tomorrow. Our friends at ARF-SEPA are working to place some as well, despite the fact that they are presently quite full.

These cats must find foster homes within 24 hours. We now have a presence on Petfinder.com and will do everything in our power to find permanent homes as quickly as possible. Can you help? Do you know someone else who can? If so, please contact us.

AFL's First Dog Walk and Halloween Dog Parade a Success!

Rained out on its planned date, the event was moved to Sunday, October 29 and still produced a great turnout and more fun than we could have imagined. All enjoyed one of three walks of varying lengths on what turned out to be a windy, but sunny and beautiful fall day. Upon returning from their walks, canine participants gathered back at Hoffman Park, donned Halloween costumes and strutted their stuff to the strains of "Hound Dog" and other appropriate music. Prizes were awarded by esteemed judges, Mayor Jayne Young and Lansdowne police officer Crescent Brown. Congratulations to "Stevie," grand prize winner of a huge basket filled with doggie delights. We then enjoyed a cook-out lunch together at the park pavilion, met many new animal friends, and vowed to do this again next year.

June, 2006 is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month!

The ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), and Fresh Step® litter celebrate June as Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month to bring attention to the wonderful cats and kittens available for adoption at shelters nationwide.

To help in the promotion of this event, the ASPCA conducted a survey of more than 5,900 cat owners from across the United States. The survey revealed some interesting facts about the behavior of cats as well as the behavior of their owners.

Of the almost 6,000 respondents to the survey, more than half (56%) reported that they have chosen their cat over a loved one in an argument, with 52% stating that they consider their cat the most important member of their family.

A little less than half of the respondents (46%) reported that they havebeen able to teach their cat a trick, while 23% said that they tried to no avail.

Not surprisingly, more than two-thirds of respondents (78%) buy their cat presents on the holidays; however,68% of the cat owners said that their cats buy them presents on the holidays. A little more than half the respondents (53%) don’t bother to wait for the holidays, and purchase their cats a toy or treat at leastonce a month.

Forty-four percent of respondents have between three and five cats in their home, whileone-third (33%) live with one or two cats.

Lastly, 34% reported spending over $500 per year on their cat.

Spring and summer are the times of year when animal shelters are often over-flowing with cats of all ages, sizes, and colors. By adopting a feline friend, not only are you giving a shelter cat a second chance, but you will also have a lifelong companion who will bring many years of love and devotion to your family.
